What Is an Interview Probability Score (IPS)?

You apply to dozens of jobs and hear back from a handful. Sound familiar? The Interview Probability Score (IPS) was built to change that.
What is the IPS?
Every time Winnow matches your profile to a job, it calculates an Interview Probability Score — a number from 0 to 100 that estimates how likely you are to land an interview for that specific role.
Instead of spray-and-pray, you can focus your energy on the jobs where you have the strongest shot.
How is it calculated?
The IPS is a weighted composite of three core signals:
| Signal | Weight | What it measures | |---|---|---| | Resume Score | 70% | How well your resume aligns with the job | | Cover Letter Score | 20% | Relevance and strength of your cover letter | | Application Logistics | 10% | Timing, location fit, and application completeness |
The Resume Score: where most of the signal lives
Your Resume Score is itself built from six weighted factors:
| Factor | Max Points | What it captures | |---|---|---| | Skills match | 45 | How many of the job's required skills appear in your resume | | Title alignment | 25 | How closely your past titles match the target role | | Location fit | 10 | Whether you're in the right geography or the role is remote | | Experience level | 10 | Whether your years of experience match the range | | Salary fit | 5 | Whether your expectations align with the posted range | | Job type fit | 5 | Full-time, part-time, contract — does it match your preference? |
Skills matching carries the most weight because hiring managers consistently rank relevant skills as their top filter.
What's a good score?
- 60+ — Strong match. Prioritize these applications.
- 40–59 — Decent fit, but you may need to tailor your resume.
- Below 40 — Long shot. Consider whether this role is worth the effort.
As a rule of thumb, focus on jobs scoring 40 or above. You'll get more interviews per application and waste less time on roles that aren't realistic.
How to improve your IPS
1. Add missing skills to your resume
Winnow shows you exactly which skills the job is looking for that are missing from your resume. If you genuinely have those skills, add them. Keyword alignment matters.
2. Tailor your resume for each application
Use Winnow's tailored resume feature to generate a version of your resume that's optimized for a specific job. This alone can move your score by 10–20 points.
3. Write a targeted cover letter
A generic cover letter scores lower than one that mirrors the job's language and requirements. Winnow's cover letter generator handles this for you.
4. Keep your profile current
Your title history, location, salary expectations, and job type preferences all feed into the score. Outdated info means inaccurate scores.
5. Get a referral
Referrals carry an outsized multiplier in the IPS formula. If you know someone at the company, mention it — referred candidates are dramatically more likely to get interviews.
The bottom line
The IPS turns a gut feeling into a data point. Instead of wondering whether you're qualified for a role, you get a clear signal — and actionable advice on how to close the gap.
